Eastern Indonesia (Sumba / Flores), first half of the 20th century

Stylistic attribution based on morphology and iconography

Carved from solid wood and structured in a columnar form, this figure presents a formal and symbolic language strongly

associated with the sculptural traditions of Eastern Indonesia, particularly the regions of Sumba and Flores.

The frontal headdress, defined by spiral motifs, is one of the most distinctive elements of the piece. Within Oceanic cultures,

the spiral is not decorative but symbolic, representing vital energy, cyclical continuity, and spiritual flow, often linked to

lineage, protection, and connection between realms.

The sculpture brings together two complementary dimensions: a sense of ritual authority, expressed through its frontal

composition, vertical structure, and elaborate headdress; and a role of domestic protection, conveyed through its contained

posture and stable presence.

The large, open eyes suggest active vigilance. This is not an introspective figure, but a conscious presence that observes and

guards. Its frontal orientation is not aesthetic, but relational — it engages directly with the surrounding space.

The softly eroded patina, combined with the depth and precision of the carving, supports its age while preserving sculptural

clarity. The piece retains strength, definition, and presence.

More than a decorative object, this is a guardian sculpture, conceived to maintain symbolic balance and protection within its

environment.
